So, you're leaving JHU.
Departing Students/Researchers or PIs of Departing Students/Researchers¶
If you are a student or researcher that is either leaving JHU or will no longer be using the JHPCE cluster, please prepare for your departure.
Work with your PI to establish what should be done with your data and how long you need to access JHPCE clusters.
When you have a plan, reach out to us at bitsupport@lists.jhu.edu with the details so that we can do the right things.
Your access¶
We may be able to keep your account open after you leave JHU if your PI agrees to continue to sponsor your usage.
You may need to have a valid JHED ID (Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory ID), for example if you are a user of the JADE cluster. (You do not need that to access our main, but you won't be able to use our web portal(s) that depend on logging in with a JHEDID.)
Departmental administrators can work with your PI to sponsor an active JHEDID for a fee. (There may be limitations on which personnel can access that service -- maybe not undergraduates, for example.)
Your data¶
You may have files scattered across multiple locations. Only you know about where they are and what value they have. Start with your home directory and then move to any items you may have in shared project disk allocations (those have path names beginning with "/dcs").
Take some time to identify, reorganize and document your files. Your future self might appreciate that!
Which files do you need to keep for yourself? Consider whether you are authorized to keep them -- if unsure, talk to your PI. We have some tips on transferring data to and from the cluster here.
Which files does your PI need to retain, and where should they go so your PI and/or others can access them? Which account should become the owner of them?
Does working with your files require being able to access your "built environment"? By that we mean things like Conda setups or Python virtual environments. Which files in your home directory are required to recreate them?
Departing PIs/Departments¶
If you are a sponsoring PI and you are leaving JHU, or will no longer be using the JHPCE cluster, please reach out to us at bitsupport@lists.jhu.edu so that we can coordinate closing out your project. There will need to be a number of decisions made about your account and data.
- Any users under your project will that will continue to use the JHPCE cluster will need to be moved under another PI's project. We will need an "OK" from the adopting PI in order to move anyone under their Project.
- All users that are not picked up by another sponsoring PI will have their accounts closed and home directories deleted.
- If you have data stored in a DCS storage allocation, the allocation will need to be either moved under another project, or deleted. As with users, you will need to identify a new PI/Project that will assume ownership of your storage allocation.
- Please be sure to transfer any data you will need to retain to a location outside of the cluster so that you can access it once you account is closed.
